Celebrating Milestones: A Road Scholar Staff Adventure in Africa
Choosing the Ultimate Celebration
For a recent milestone birthday, Evie E., Road Scholar's Senior Director of Campaign Circulation & Analytics, sought an extraordinary adventure. "I chose the Southern Africa Safari and Train Adventure: From Cape Town to Victoria Falls because I wanted to do something truly epic. I didn't want to stay home and feel old,” she laughs. “I wanted to be out exploring."
Having never visited Africa before, Evie conducted a characteristically extensive search on the Road Scholar website. "I analyzed all the options, and this program checked every box and more."

A Journey Across Four Countries
The itinerary spanned South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. "We explored Cape Town, took a luxury train from Pretoria to Victoria Falls and embarked on both land and boat safaris,” Evie says. “It was a perfect way to see multiple wish list destinations in one journey."
Despite the understandably high tuition, Evie found the experience well worth it. "For everything included — four countries, incredible safaris, unbelievable landscapes and learning opportunities — it was an amazing value."
Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters
Seeing Africa’s wildlife up close was a highlight. "We saw all the major animals, including the Big 5 — lions, leopards, rhinoceros, African buffalo and elephants — especially elephants,” she says. “So many elephants! I was so happy.”
For Evie, who has photos of herself with animals in almost every country she’s been to, the opportunity to experience time at an elephant sanctuary made a lasting impression. "Hugging and feeding an elephant were among my favorite moments, she says. “As an animal lover, it was incredibly special."
The Luxury of Rail Travel
Safari by land and even by sea is understandable. But by rail?
That’s exactly what the Rovos Rail experience offers — train safaris through the heart of Africa. "Spending four nights on a beautifully restored train was unforgettable,” Evie says. “I love trains, often opting for them as my preferred means of travel, but this was next level. The food was amazing, with regional wine pairings, and the whole journey was a balance of adventure and relaxation."
Each day on the train followed a delightful rhythm. "Mornings were spent enjoying the scenery, afternoons on safari and evenings indulging in gourmet dinners,”she says. “It was so good for the soul."

Climate and Geographic Diversity
One of the program's strengths is its variety of experiences, climates and diverse landscapes. Though most think of Africa as hot and arid, the continent is versatile — and surprising. "The weather in Cape Town, in the Southern Hemisphere, was cool, and seeing penguins at Boulders Beach was a fun surprise,” Evie says. “Heading north, it got much warmer, especially in Zimbabwe."
The program concluded in Namibia with a restful stay. "By then, after nearly two weeks of travel, we were ready to slow down,” she says. “Our cabins overlooked the river, and the pace became more relaxed."
Traveling Solo with Road Scholar
As someone who frequently travels alone, both with Road Scholar and independently, Evie found the group dynamic particularly rewarding. "The program is just so well organized, and the participants were fantastic — curious, fun and eager to experience this journey together as a community."
Packing Tips for Future Travelers
For those considering this program, Evie offers practical advice about packing. "Pack lightly and with versatility, remembering that you’ll be crossing through various climates."
Safari attire requires special consideration. "When you're on safari, you need to be careful about what you wear,” she says. “You can't wear bright colors, but you also don't want to wear black because that attracts bugs and mosquitoes."
The train added another consideration. "Dinners were more formal, so I packed something nice. Luckily, we had laundry options along the way — definitely a bonus."

The Road Scholar Difference
Ultimately, spending her birthday with Road Scholar was an easy choice. "I knew it would be an incredible experience — well-organized, educational and truly memorable,” Evie says.
As an employee, she values both the programs and the participants. "I love traveling with Road Scholar. The participants are smart, funny and adventurous, and even going solo, I always feel safe."
Most importantly — would she do it again? "Absolutely."
Beyond the Horizon
What began as a way to celebrate a significant birthday became an unforgettable journey across continents, cultures and landscapes. From Cape Town’s cool breezes to the luxury of Rovos Rail, from up-close encounters with elephants to quiet evenings by the river, Evie’s Road Scholar adventure delivered exactly what she was hoping for — an epic celebration and a lifetime of memories.
In embracing the unknown, Evie discovered that meaningful milestones aren't necessarily measured in years, but in moments of wonder, connection and discovery.
