How Are You Aging Adventurously? Let’s Celebrate Together.
On June 8, 1975, Road Scholar launched its very first program. Fifty years later, we’re still going strong — and still aging adventurously. That’s why we’re declaring June 8 Age Adventurously Day — a new annual celebration of bold spirit, lifelong learning and the joy of growing older.

What does it mean to age adventurously? It could mean summiting mountains or sampling new cuisines. It could be adopting a puppy, joining a dance class or finally booking that program you’ve been dreaming about. For some, it’s skydiving. For others, it’s karaoke (or both — bonus points).
However you define adventure, June 8 is your day to embrace it.

To celebrate, we invited Road Scholar participants — and anyone else inspired by the idea — to share how they’re aging adventurously this year. Here are just a few of their stories.
- “My husband and I are hiking the Appalachian Trail. We just finished up the northernmost terminus at Mount Katahdin, Maine, and are heading south.” — Rachel M.
- “On June 8, I will be in Iceland on my second Road Scholar program. I am thrilled to have found an organization that embraces adventure and learning at any age!” — Patricia A.
- “I got my private pilot’s license many years ago but have not flown for a long time. I recently retired, so I want to reengage with my passion and knock the rust off my wings!” — Mani K.
- “I’ll be in the Seychelles on June 8 — after a stop in Dubai — finally checking off some of the most remote places I’ve always wanted to see.” — Barbara H.
- “I’m trying 70 new things before my 70th birthday — I’ve already flown a plane, stomped grapes, tried a flotation tank and I want to skydive for the finale.” — Anna A.
- “I’ll be on a nature photography program to Channel Islands National Park with 15 other photographers — capturing pelagic birds, marine life, and the endemic Island Fox. The adventure starts June 8!” — Jenn D.
- “Recently I attended a Road Scholar hiking program in Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns — my first time really hiking! We even crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico, where I rode a donkey to a village (and somehow didn’t fall off). Now I’m hooked.” — Cynthia O.
- “I sold almost everything and moved to Gotland with two suitcases and a cat. Now I’m a part-time historical reenactor in California and a novelist the rest of the year. My adventures used to be more physical, but now I get to share my love of cultural history — and that’s just as thrilling.” — Kathryn L.
- “We’ll be celebrating 60 years of marriage. Try and top that adventure!” — Karen H.
- “June 8 is also my birthday — I’ll be dreaming of England’s Lake District while planning my next Road Scholar program.” — Valerie G.
- “I’m confronting anxieties, traveling solo and kicking off a whole new chapter. I’ve promised myself: June 8 is day one of my next adventure.” — Kristen S.
