Savannah Style: Mystery and Manners
Savannah is a city of mercurial history and enigmatic charms. Home to cotton barons, shipping magnates, antiques dealers, and tireless preservationists, it has helped define Southern elegance, manner, and style for more than two centuries. From the slightly faded grandeur of the Second Empire baroque Thomas Levy House, filled with antique maps, prints, books, and other curiosities, to the phantasmal, Proustian decor of the high style Greek Revival Knapp House, the 20 houses featured in this book express the city's alternating moods of decadence and decorum. Quite often, a serene exterior-- designed in a Georgian, federal, or restrained Greek Revival style-- will relinquish its polite composure to an ingenious play of interior whimsy or flight of decorative fancy. Elegant town houses designed by William Jay, John Ash, Isaiah Davenport, and William Gibbons Preston, gracious plantation manors, and unpretentious summer cottages are featured in detail in word and image. A delightful foreword by John Berendt acts as an informative addendum to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and an excellent introduction to this book.
The Complete Stories: Flannery O'Conner
Native Savannian who won the 1971 National Book Award for Fiction. Thirty-one tales depicting the humorous, of near tragic conditions of life in the Deep South during the fifties.
Rebels, Saints, and Sinners: Savannah's Rich History and Colorful Personalities
Since its founding in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, the city of Savannah has experienced many triumphs and disasters. Its citizens have endured hurricanes, fires, and epidemics, and they have dealt successfully with social injustice and political corruption. Savannahians have also experienced both sides of war-winning as colonial rebels in the American Revolution and losing as Confederate patriots in the Civil War-and they have welcomed many heroes and stars to their city such as George Washington, Elvis Presley, and Shoeless Joe Jackson.
In Rebels, Saints, and Sinners, Timothy Daiss tells the story of Savannah through captivating anecdotes about the city's past-a past full of intriguing characters and astonishing twists of fate. This book offers a wealth of detailed historical research presented in easily accessible prose, and it is a must-read for history buffs, travelers, educators, and anyone else interested in America's greatest cities.

Natural, historical, cultural, and recreational sites along the Georgia coast are described in detail. Includes driving maps and directions.
Spectres and Other Strange Tales/Savannah
Good dose of regional history and insights into the lives of people living in and around Savannah for decades-and of course-local legends/ghost stories.
Slavery and Freedom in Savannah
"Slavery and Freedom in Savannah" is a richly illustrated, accessibly written book modeled on the very successful "Slavery in New York," a volume Leslie M. Harris coedited with Ira Berlin. Here Harris and Daina Ramey Berry have collected a variety of perspectives on slavery, emancipation, and black life in Savannah from the city’s founding to the early twentieth century. Written by leading historians of Savannah, Georgia, and the South, the volume includes a mix of longer thematic essays and shorter sidebars focusing on individual people, events, and places.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Referred to in Savannah as "The Book"-non-fiction, adult language-account of a local antique dealer, Jim Williams', four (!) trials for the same murder in the 1980's-also a Clint Eastwood movie released in 1997.
Saving Savannah - The City and the Civil War
In this masterful portrait of life in Savannah before, during, and after the Civil War, prize-winning historian Jacqueline Jones transports readers to the balmy, raucous streets of that fabled Southern port city. Here is a subtle and rich social history that weaves together stories of the everyday lives of blacks and whites, rich and poor, men and women from all walks of life confronting the transformations that would alter their city forever. Deeply researched and vividly written, Saving Savannah is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the Civil War years.

We will visit the Massie Heritage Museum, which was once Savannah’s first free public school. This program is an action-packed week in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. It was the perfect mix of group activities, plus free time to explore on our own. Joyce is an excellent leader, and worked very hard to make sure it was an enjoyable experience for all of us. She helped me figure out how to best utilize the free time to do some other things I was interested in. I was particularly happy with the accommodations, and the hotel breakfast. Overall, a great program.

The Signature City Savannah trip was outstanding. It was a well rounded program with history, music, art, and even a cooking class featuring local cuisine. A very enjoyable program that adds a better understanding of the slave situation from many generations ago.

What a gem of a city, and Road Scholar was a perfect way to experience it!

This was my first solo trip and I am so glad I did it. I learned so much more about slavery than I ever knew. Joyce our leader was so knowledgeable and her love for Savanna was readily apparent. I made many much needed new friends. I will take more of these tours!

My mom and I just finished the Signature Savannah program. Beverly Citron was our group leader. She is absolutely wonderful! She caused everyone to be so comfortable, integrated and interactive with each other. The tour was totally on schedule and had a wide variety of educational and experiential activities. Savannah itself is quite historically and artistically interesting. The Johnny Mercer trio with David and Alisha Duckworth and Roger Moss was a treat. Joyce Harvison provided informative lectures about historical information. Chef Darin was quite humorous and fun. The houses, squares and museums we explored provided a great cross section portraying Savannah. This was our first Road Scholar program and I highly recommend it!

Cooking Shrimp with red eye gravy and touring some of the oldest homes in the USA, what could be better.

Overall a really good experience with varied activities, while showing what Savannah is all about. The Embassy Suites is a good place to stay and they gave us a lot of consideration. The days were full but not too full. It was fun to go around Savannah in a trolley, the tours were good. I have gained a good understanding about Savannah's history and present.

Such a wonderful trip. I met many good folks. It was eye-opening to hear and learn about the history of Savanna. I really enjoyed the cooking class and learning to use cooking tools for cooking better.

This was a great trip (9/11-16) made all the better by our wonderful leader, Joyce, and such interesting, welcoming, and fun group members. I was hoping to get an email list and group photo, but haven’t received that as of yet…I sure hope to. (Hi Sharon & Bill/bro…enjoyed our chats and hope to see you again). Looking forward to my next trip in January. RS makes traveling solo easier.

This was my first Road Scholar trip in 3+ years, and it exceeded my expectations. Our guide Beverley was first-rate and always responsive to group requests and needs. The lectures, trolley tours, historic houses, churches, and museums were educational and enjoyable, and the River Street Market was a treat for shopping. My favorite events were a Johnny Mercer trio (piano, bass, vocalist) that performed for our group on our last full day, and a cooking class that evening with a Savannah chef. Lodgings at the Embassy Suites were comfortable and well-appointed, and their breakfast buffet was outstanding. We had a friendly, punctual group of 20 (no laggards) and shared laughs and stories over dinners. I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to explore the River Walk with all its shops - our trolley stopped there for a 10-minute photo op - but that's an excuse to return to Savannah for another visit. Outstanding itinerary and trip!!

Our Guide Beverly was top notch. She was very organized and kept us organized, although I must admit this group of travelers was very organized themselves. We had no late comers and all were very congenial .
Savannah is a beautiful destination. We covered a lot of territory and were exposed to much of the history. Historic homes and museums were visited . A highlight was a cooking class in which we all participated and then got to consume the feast!
The accommodations at the Embassy Suites were wonderful.
As a solo traveler I would recommend this trip to all.

This program covers the historical, cultural, and culinary aspects of Savannah in a most interesting and enlightening way. I learned something from every place we visited, from every presentation we had, and from the hands-on cooking class. Having this program led by a very personable and knowledgeable group leader made it all the more enjoyable!!

Signature City Savannah will be a great experience for anyone interested in early American history as well as those who love music, food and just being outside in the lovely squares. Exploring Savannah is a way to time travel without leaving modern comforts!

This was a very enjoyable trip. The pace is well described. All of the docent's were well versed. There was ample opportunity for free time to explore on our own.

Our Travel Director, Joyce, was friendly and knowledgeable. The Embassy Suites hotel was a quiet location but easy walk to waterfront. Comp breakfast with nice selection had made to order omelets and two free drinks at happy hour to share conversation with fellow travelers. Chris’ intro to Savannah history, the Jepsen and Ships of the Sea Museums, and Chef Darin’s “Low Country Cuisine” cooking class were all highlights.

This program provides an excellent overview of Savannah's history and culture. I especially enjoyed the concert of Johnny Mercer's songs and the southern cooking class (and meal). For your free afternoon, I recommend taking a tour of Bonaventure cemetery.

This is a great trip for those who are seeing Savannah for the first time. Its a good blend of history, music and food. The location of the hotel is perfect for walking around the historic city during your free time. would suggest you plan ahead of time for the free time, as reservations at the popular sites are booked well ahead of time. November is a perfect time for weather and low crowds. Great trip to see a city for the first time!

Visiting Savannah was something my husband and I had wanted to do for some time. The program gave us a wonderful picture of the history, culture, music and food. We kept busy without being overtaxed. Our location was such that we could easily walk the historical district and we took full advantage of that detail.

We absolutely loved our 2nd Road Scholar program in Savannah. We loved it so much in 2013 we decided to return. I was different in some ways and much the same in others. All was enjoyable. Savannah is a beautiful city and Larry helped us explore and enjoy it's beauty as he sees his "hometown."

The survey seemed to be too long at first, but by the end I decided it was a good one that it provided a reasonable opportunity to provide accurate feedback; and I was glad to do it because I enjoyed this program so very much.
