Hotel check-in from 2:00 p.m. Transfer from Catania Airport to hotel is 45 miles (1-hour ride). Walking approximately 1 mile.
Afternoon:
Check-in and settle in. At 5:30 p.m., we gather in the meeting room for an Orientation session. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Breakfasts will be buffets. Other included meals will be plated and served from a set menu unless indicated otherwise; water is included, other beverages will be available for purchase. Evenings at leisure offer opportunities to make the program more meaningful and memorable through personal independent exploration, attending performances or other events, or simply relaxing and making new friends among fellow participants. The Group Leader will always be happy to offer suggestions. Transportation will be provided primarily by bus and regional train. Periods in the schedule designated as "Free time" and "At leisure" offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times might change due to local circumstances/conditions. We will alert you as quickly as possible in the event of changes. Thank you for being so understanding. Next, we will join our Group Leader in a welcome cocktail (or fruit juice).

We set out on foot for a field trip to the Teatro Greco (Greek Theater) along Corso Umberto I. This lively street, exclusively reserved for pedestrians, is adorned with various shops and cafés. The remarkably well-maintained amphitheater, featuring stone "bleachers" sculpted out of rock, traces its origins back to the 3rd century BCE. Our knowledgeable local expert will identify the Mediterranean communities that colonized eastern Sicily and elucidate the additions made by the Romans in the 2nd century CE. A picturesque panorama of the sea and Mount Etna unfolds as we gaze beyond the proscenium's columns. If the climb seems daunting, you can appreciate the theater and the awe-inspiring vista of Mt. Etna from the proscenium level, our initial point of entry into the theater.

Free time. Take this opportunity for independent personal exploration to see and do what interests you most. You can also consult your suggested Free Time activities list in your program materials. In a classroom session at the hotel led by our Group Leader, we will delve into the intricate tapestry of Italian society, exploring its regional nuances and the profound influence of national institutions that continue to shape the lives of its residents with a lecture on Italy today.

Getting on/off a bus; driving about 40 miles throughout the day, approximately 2 hours of riding time. Walking up to 3 miles over the course of the day; uneven terrain at the winery.

We will venture on a bus journey with a local expert, heading towards the northeastern slopes of Mt. Etna National Park. During our expedition, we will explore the captivating history of volcanic eruptions associated with this active volcano. It is worth noting that Mount Etna holds the prestigious title of a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. According to the UNESCO inscription, "Mount Etna stands as the tallest mountain on a Mediterranean island and ranks as the most active stratovolcano worldwide. Its eruptive legacy spans half a million years, with documented activity spanning at least 2,700 years. The near-continuous eruptions of Mount Etna have a profound impact on the fields of volcanology, geophysics, and other disciplines within Earth sciences. Moreover, the volcano nurtures significant terrestrial ecosystems, featuring unique plant and animal species. Its ongoing activity serves as a natural laboratory for studying ecological and biological processes." Following this enlightening encounter, we will proceed to a charming winery, immersing ourselves in an unforgettable experience where we can personally witness the profound impact of ancient lava flows as they intricately intertwine with the soil, bestowing it with unparalleled enrichment and nurturing the growth of exceptional vineyards.

Our gracious host will passionately introduce us to the exquisite wines crafted from the very vineyards surrounding us while we indulge in a delectable meal sourced directly from the farm. To further enhance our appreciation, we will savor a tasting session, allowing us to explore the diverse flavors and nuances of these exceptional wines.

Upon our return by bus to Taormina in the late afternoon, take some time to unwind and rejuvenate. Following a break, we will convene in the meeting room for an enlightening presentation led by a local expert. Through this fascinating session, we will delve into the vibrant tapestry of Sicilian folklore and traditions, gaining insights into modern society's evolving dynamics. Our knowledgeable speaker will shed light on the shifting roles of both men and women, the intricate dynamics of family structures, and the profound influence of the church. This immersive experience promises to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural heritage that permeates the captivating island of Sicily.

In the late morning, we will conclude our stay at the hotel and embark on a scenic bus journey along the breathtaking coastline. Our destination is an enchanting agriturismo on the south slope of Mt. Etna, Europe's highest active volcano. Immerse yourself in the wonders of this working farm as we meander through the sprawling estate and lush orchards that flourish upon the fertile volcanic soil. While exploring this remarkable agriturismo, prepare to be enchanted by the harmonious fusion of nature's bounty and human cultivation.

Afternoon:
Once back on board the bus, we will resume our scenic journey towards the exquisite city of Siracusa and its ancient district, the island of Ortygia. Ortygia, a place steeped in history, is inaccessible to bus traffic. After our check-in and settling into our rooms at the hotel, we will have an opportunity to freshen up and rejuvenate. As we convene in the lobby, we will be joined by a local expert who will guide us on a walking field trip to unveil the wonders of Ortygia. Among the many highlights awaiting us is the awe-inspiring Duomo, the cathedral of Siracusa. This magnificent structure is a testament to the diverse cultures once colonized Sicily, each leaving an indelible mark on its architectural style. Originating in the 7th century CE, the cathedral was constructed upon the remnants of a 5th-century BCE temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Notably, Doric columns from the original temple were seamlessly integrated into the cathedral's walls. We will have the privilege of exploring the interior, which was meticulously rebuilt in the distinctive Sicilian Baroque style during the 18th century following the collapse of the ancient facade during an earthquake. Prepare to be enchanted by the pedestrian center of Ortygia, where narrow streets intertwine with lively squares. This vibrant hub is replete with local artisan workshops, charming cafés, and enticing boutiques, offering us a delightful tapestry of experiences to embrace.

Prepare to be transported through the annals of history as we embark on a field trip to a living museum—a village frozen in time, depopulated by emigration a century ago. Led by a local expert, we will begin our journey with a brief visit to the local museum exhibit, immersing ourselves in the region's rich heritage before venturing into the heart of the village. Within the village, an array of charming sites awaits us. We will have the opportunity to explore a meticulously preserved farm laborer's hut adorned with its original furnishings, allowing us to envision the humble lives of those who toiled on the land. Additionally, we will step into the world of craftsmanship as we visit a carpenter shop and a shoemaker's shop, where the echoes of skilled artisans still resonate within the walls. To gain insight into the management of the land, we will explore the home of a land manager (overseer) whose residence offers a glimpse into the intricate dynamics of rural life. Lastly, we will encounter a wine press, a reminder of the enduring tradition of viticulture in the region. Following this immersive experience, our journey will continue as we board the bus and make our way to a nearby agriturismo.

Afternoon:
We will again board the bus and commence our return journey to Siracusa, with an anticipated arrival mid-afternoon. If weather and sea conditions permit, an exciting adventure awaits us as we stroll toward the dock. There, we will undertake a boat ride encircling the picturesque island of Ortygia. This enchanting excursion will showcase numerous highlights, including a captivating pass by the 13th-century Maniace Fortress. Additionally, we will encounter a fountain named after a Greek nymph whose mythical tale involves her disappearance in a spring while being pursued by a river god. The fountain, adorned with papyrus plants and frequented by ducks, holds great significance to the locals. Its freshwater source was vital in preserving the population during long sieges by invading forces centuries ago. After our field trip, we have two options. Those who prefer a leisurely walk can return to the hotel at their own pace. Alternatively, Siracusa beckons with independent discoveries for those seeking further exploration, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the city's rich offerings and uncover its hidden gems. NOTE: In case of inclement weather or unsafe sea conditions, our Group Leader will make every effort to reschedule the boating field trip, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants.

Our next adventure awaits as we board our comfortable bus and head towards the outskirts of Siracusa. Accompanied by a local expert, we will embark on a field trip into the Archaeological Zone, an area of historical significance. Our exploration will encompass notable sites such as the remarkable Greek amphitheater and the Paradise Quarry, which once held captive 7,000 Athenian soldiers countless centuries ago. The Greek Theater, a magnificent creation carved meticulously into the rocky hillside during the 5th century BCE, held immense importance in the ancient world. As we step into this awe-inspiring amphitheater, we can ascend a few of the stone seats, taking our place on the stone "bleachers" and immersing ourselves in the perspective of spectators from centuries past. From this vantage point, we can marvel at the grand proscenium, gazing upon it just as our predecessors did long ago. Having absorbed the rich history and ambiance of this ancient site, we will regroup and board the bus once again. Our next destination awaits—an enchanting agriturismo, where further delectable delights and discoveries await us.

After a delightful lunch, we will regroup and board our bus, returning to Siracusa. Our next stop will be the Marionette Museum, a fascinating venue offering insight into puppets' cherished tradition in Sicilian culture. Within the museum's walls, we will immerse ourselves in the captivating world of marionettes, discovering their historical significance and the intricacies of their craftsmanship. To truly experience the magic, we will have the opportunity to witness a captivating marionette performance in the local dialect. Through skillful manipulation, these exquisitely crafted puppets will bring epic tales of heroes, villains, and mythical creatures to life, preserving a rich heritage passed down through generations in Sicily. The museum docent will provide us with an explanation of the show's plot and an introduction to the vivid characters. Additionally, our Group Leader will offer us a concise summary of the storyline and descriptions of the fascinating characters involved.

En route, prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking vistas that unfold before us, revealing the wondrous tapestry of the island's mountainous heart. Sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in the magnificent panoramic views during this picturesque journey.

Afternoon:
Nestled within the picturesque landscape, Piazza Armerina is a charming small town. However, hidden beneath its unassuming facade, a stroke of pure chance led to discovering a remarkable treasure—the ruins of a private Roman villa. This extraordinary archaeological site boasts an astounding 63 rooms, adorned with an extensive and awe-inspiring collection of floor mosaics spanning an impressive 377,000 square feet. Led by a knowledgeable local expert, we will embark on a captivating journey along a network of catwalks, venturing through the villa's remains. Along the way, the expert will paint a vivid picture, unraveling the significance of the mesmerizing mosaics and presenting captivating theories surrounding the enigmatic owner who commissioned the villa's construction. The recently restored mosaics, now safeguarded by a new roof cover that replaces the previous Plexiglas system, stand as a testament to the timeless artistry and rich history preserved within this archaeological gem. Following our field trip, our adventure continues as we resume our ride towards Agrigento. Upon arrival, we will check in to our hotel.

Through a visually engaging and informative session, this presentation will provide us with essential historical context, enabling us to deepen our appreciation for the forthcoming field trip to the archaeological area later in the day. This remarkable site is a testament to the magnificence of Greek temple complexes, surpassing even those found in Greece, perched gracefully along a plateau overlooking the glistening waters. Boarding a bus, we will traverse the scenic route to the awe-inspiring Valley of the Temples. This remarkable destination holds the prestigious title of a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. Led by a local expert, we will embark on our exploration, immersing ourselves in the grandeur of the ancient ruins and delving into the rich historical tapestry that this remarkable site unveils. According to the UNESCO inscription: "Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. Its supremacy and pride are demonstrated by the remains of the magnificent Doric temples that dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact under today's fields and orchards. Selected excavated areas highlight the later Hellenistic and Roman town and the burial practices of its early Christian inhabitants."

Once we have completed the check-out process at the hotel, we will gather and board our bus, commencing our journey toward Selinunte. Selinunte, situated on the southwestern coast of Sicily, is a captivating archaeological site steeped in history. Once a thriving Greek city, it flourished as a trade outpost between the 7th and 6th centuries BCE until Carthage attacked and destroyed it. Today, the ruins of Selinunte remind us of its former glory, with vast temple complexes and expansive archaeological park spread across its picturesque landscape. We are treated to breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea while exploring the remnants of this ancient city, marveling at the sheer scale and architectural grandeur of the temples that have endured the test of time. Selinunte offers a mesmerizing journey back in time, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of the region. Our destination holds a magnificent archaeological park spanning an impressive expanse of over 600 acres, making it the largest in all of Europe. Led by a local expert, we will be privy to an extraordinary demonstration of craftsmanship, observing how the temple columns were meticulously chiseled out of solid stone, a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the ancient artisans.

Once again, we will reunite with our bus and continue onward toward the vibrant city of Palermo. Upon our arrival, we will check in at our hotel, allowing us a well-deserved opportunity to settle into our comfortable rooms and freshen up after our travels. In the late afternoon, we will gather in the lobby, where our Group Leader will lead us to our classroom for an enlightening presentation that delves deep into the rich tapestry of Sicilian history, offering us valuable insights and a deeper understanding of the captivating heritage that surrounds us.

Together, we will journey through the city, immersing ourselves in the awe-inspiring beauty of its magnificent Baroque churches. The Baroque style, characterized by its ornate embellishments, dramatic flair, and intricate details, expresses itself in the numerous churches, palaces, and public buildings that adorn Palermo's landscape. From the magnificent façades adorned with elaborate sculptures and decorative elements to the opulent interiors featuring intricate frescoes, stuccoes, and gilded accents, the Baroque architecture in Palermo mesmerizes with its sheer extravagance and artistry.

We will take taxis to a meeting point for the next part of our walking field trip in Palermo. One of the highlights of our exploration will be the Palatine Chapel of the Norman Kings, a true gem of the city. This architectural masterpiece, commissioned by Ruggero II of Sicily in the 12th century, showcases a harmonious blend of Norman, Byzantine, and Islamic influences, reflecting Sicily's rich and diverse history. Within its sacred walls, we will be enthralled by the breathtaking beauty of its floor-to-ceiling mosaics, intricately crafted with precious stones and adorned with shimmering gold. This dazzling display of artistic mastery will leave an indelible impression, allowing us to witness the profound connection between spirituality, history, and art in Palermo. In the hotel meeting room, our Group Leader leads us in a lecture on the intricate origins of the Mafia. Through a captivating narrative that weaves together history, culture, and human dynamics, we will trace the remarkable growth of this clandestine network. From its humble beginnings in the mid-19th century, we will unravel the intricate web that allowed the Mafia to flourish, expanding its power and influence over time. This immersive experience gives us a deeper understanding of the Mafia's multifaceted nature, shedding light on its historical significance and lasting impact that reverberates today.

Our exploration continues as we board our bus for a self-directed walk in the enchanting city of Erice. Accompanied by our Group Leader, we will embark on an insightful walk through this ancient mountain-top city, steeped in history and legends. According to tradition, Erice was founded by Elymian refugees who sought solace after the fall of Troy. The city derived its name from Eryx, the legendary founding king credited with introducing the worship of Aphrodite to Sicily. During our visit, we will have the opportunity to witness the remnants of her temple, a poignant reminder of the city's mythological heritage. Additionally, the noteworthy church and formidable Norman walls add to the allure of Erice, providing further insight into its rich cultural tapestry.

Our journey continues as we venture onwards to the salt works in Trapani. These ancient salt pans, utilized since Antiquity, are ensconced in an idyllic location where the sun and wind harmonize to evaporate seawater in expansive water basins naturally. Upon arrival, our bus will conveniently drop us off at one of the town's ancient gates, setting the stage for a stroll through Trapani at our own pace. This delightful walk immerses us in the town's charm, absorbing the distinctive atmosphere and embracing the local culture. We will embark on our return journey to the hotel, anticipating a mid- to late-afternoon arrival. This leisurely ride will allow us to unwind as we observe the countryside, allowing us ample time to freshen up and relax before our next engagement.

As we venture higher, a magnificent sight awaits us—the grand Norman cathedral, whose interior boasts a resplendent display of Byzantine medieval mosaics showcasing unparalleled craftsmanship. As we step into this sacred space, we are immediately enveloped by awe and wonder. The cathedral's interior unfolds, adorned in resplendent Byzantine medieval mosaics of the highest craftsmanship. These intricate artworks, meticulously crafted with astonishing detail, tell stories of religious devotion and depict scenes of profound spiritual significance. The golden hues of the mosaics, combined with the ethereal light filtering through the stained glass windows, create a mesmerizing ambiance that transports us to another time. Under the guidance of a local expert, we will delve into the intricate details that distinguish a church from a basilica and a duomo (cathedral), gaining a deeper understanding of these architectural distinctions. Stepping inside the cathedral's sacred space, our expert will unveil the stories and narratives embedded within its walls' golden mosaics. These masterful creations, meticulously crafted with timeless artistry, capture the essence of the Byzantine tradition and offer glimpses into the region's rich cultural heritage. Having immersed ourselves in the enchanting beauty of Monreale's cathedral, we will return to Palermo by bus.
