Hotel check-in from 2:00 p.m. Transfer from Pisa airport to hotel is 25 miles (30-minute ride). The orientation walk in Lucca is less than 1 mile.
Afternoon:
Check in and settle in. At 5:30 p.m., we will gather in the hotel lobby as we embark on an insightful neighborhood walk led by our experienced group leader. Explore the vibrant surroundings of our accommodations with our knowledgeable guide highlighting key points of interest such as nearby ATMs, pharmacies, markets, and more. Delve into the bustling local scene, discovering hidden gems and practical amenities to enhance our stay in Lucca. This walk offers the perfect opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the neighborhood's layout and uncover valuable resources for our convenience. Breakfasts will be buffets. Other included meals will be plated and served from a set menu unless indicated otherwise; water is included, and other beverages will be available for purchase. Evenings at leisure offer opportunities to make the program more meaningful and memorable through personal independent exploration, attending performances or other events, or simply relaxing and making new friends among fellow participants. The Group Leader will always be happy to offer suggestions. Transportation will be provided primarily by bus and regional train. Periods in the schedule designated as "Free time" and "At leisure" offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times might change due to local circumstances/conditions. We will alert you as quickly as possible in the event of changes. Thank you for being so understanding. Next, we will join our Group Leader in a welcome cocktail (or fruit juice).

Join the group in the hotel meeting room for our comprehensive orientation session, where we'll kick off our adventure by reviewing the up-to-date program schedule and discussing essential logistics. Our Group Leader will outline roles and responsibilities, ensuring everyone is well-prepared for the journey ahead. We'll cover safety guidelines and emergency procedures and address any questions or concerns you may have, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all. We will embark on an enriching exploration of Lucca with our expert-led visit to Piazza del Giglio, Cathedral, and San Michele. As we stroll through the charming Piazza del Giglio, surrounded by elegant buildings and bustling cafes, our knowledgeable guide will unveil the secrets of this historic square. We'll then venture into the awe-inspiring Cathedral of San Martino, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture adorned with intricate sculptures and stunning artwork. Inside, we'll marvel at the ornate marble facade and discover the cathedral's fascinating history dating back to the 11th century. Continuing our journey, we'll visit the beautiful church of San Michele in Foro, renowned for its striking facade adorned with exquisite sculptures. With our local expert's insights, we'll delve into the significance of these iconic landmarks, gaining a deeper understanding of Lucca's rich cultural heritage.

We will gather in the hotel conference room for an engaging "Welcome to Tuscany" lecture, where we'll delve into this iconic Italian region's history, culture, and traditions. Our knowledgeable Instructor will lead us on a virtual journey through Tuscany's storied past, exploring topics ranging from its Etruscan roots to its Renaissance glory days. We'll uncover the secrets behind Tuscany's renowned cuisine, world-famous wines, and timeless artistic masterpieces, immersing ourselves in the essence of this enchanting land.

Evening:
At a venue in the heart of Lucca, we will attend a performance of opera arias by Giacomo Puccini, a treasured native son of Lucca. The live performance is with a solo artist with piano accompaniment, breathing life into Puccini's timeless masterpieces. Prepare for check-out and departure in the morning.

We begin our day on foot with an expert-led exploration of Lucca's historic treasures, starting with the iconic Torre Guinigi, renowned for its distinctive rooftop garden offering panoramic cityscape views. Delve into the rich history of the ancient Amphitheater, once the heart of Roman Lucca, as our local expert unveils tales of gladiatorial contests and bustling marketplaces. We'll then wander the charming streets to discover the enchanting Church of San Frediano, adorned with stunning medieval mosaics and architectural marvels. Our journey continues to the elegant Palazzo Pfanner, where we'll admire its exquisite Baroque architecture and lush gardens, steeped in timeless elegance and grandeur.

We'll learn about the ingenious ways Tuscan cooks transformed basic staples like bread, beans, and vegetables into hearty and satisfying dishes. From ribollita, a hearty vegetable soup, to pappa al pomodoro, a rustic tomato and bread soup, we'll uncover the secrets behind these iconic Tuscan specialties. Our discussion will also touch upon the significance of olive oil, wine, and seasonal produce in Tuscan cooking, offering insights into the gastronomic traditions that have shaped the region's culinary identity for centuries.

Getting on/off a bus. The bus to Carrara is 35 miles and takes 1 hour. A short walk along a dusty dirt path with a slight incline from the bus drop-off area to the observation terrace overlooking the quarry. Walking up to 3 miles throughout the day with extended periods of standing during site visits; loose gravel, cobblestones, mostly level urban stone pedestrian-only sidewalks, and stairs in Carrara. We will travel by bus with a local expert on a field trip to an artisan workshop in Carrara and its quarries perched above. We delve into the fascinating history of marble, tracing its roots to the depths of ancient times, and learn how generations of skilled artisans have honed their craft, transforming raw blocks of stone into works of enduring beauty that grace the world's most esteemed architectural wonders. A breathtaking panorama unfolds as we ascend by bus to the quarries above the town. Here, in the heart of the quarries, we witness the evolution of excavation as mechanized equipment has revolutionized the process, juxtaposing tradition with technological prowess.

Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus. Bus to Siena is 95 miles and takes about 2.5 hours, with two stops along the way. Walking up to 3 miles throughout the day with periods of standing during site visits; uneven paths, loose gravel, cobblestones, mostly level urban stone sidewalks, and pedestrian-only roads with inclines and stairs to the main square. Hotel check-in from 3:00 p.m.

Morning:
We bid farewell to our hotel and set out for Siena. We load our suitcases onto the bus and set out for southern Tuscany. En route to Siena, we pause to pay our respects at the Florence American Cemetery just south of Florence. This serene and solemn resting place serves as the final home for over 4,400 American soldiers who gave their lives during World War II. Amidst meticulously manicured lawns, rows of white marble crosses and Stars of David, we reflect on the courage and valor of the fallen. Continuing our route, we journey to Castellina in Chianti, a charming Tuscan town nestled amidst the picturesque Chianti vineyards. Here, we take leisurely strides through the cobblestone streets, immersing ourselves in this historic enclave's rustic ambiance and timeless beauty. Before noon, we gather in the heart of town to indulge in a delightful lunch, savoring the flavors of Tuscany amidst the idyllic surroundings of Castellina in Chianti.

Afternoon:
Following lunch, we will have some time to explore Castellina independently before we continue by bus to Siena, where we will check into our hotel. After settling into our rooms, we’ll head out on a neighborhood walk of Siena with our Group Leader. This walk will take us through the vibrant surroundings of our accommodations and towards Piazza del Campo, where our Group Leader will highlight key points of interest, such as nearby ATMs, pharmacies, markets, and more.

Getting on/off a bus. Bus through the Val d'Orcia is 100 miles long and takes about 3 hours, with multiple stops. Walking up to 3.5 miles throughout the day with periods of standing during site visits; uneven paths, cobblestones, mostly level urban stone sidewalks, pedestrian-only roads with inclines to the main square, and stairs to/from the town centers. We embark on an adventure through the stunning Val d'Orcia. We depart from Siena by bus with our local expert, destined for the enchanting destinations of Bagno Vignoni and Pienza, with the delightful countryside available on both sides of our bus. Our first destination, Bagno Vignoni, boasts a history that dates back to ancient Roman times when its natural thermal baths were renowned for their healing properties. Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Tuscany, this quaint village invites us to stroll along its picturesque streets and marvel at its centerpiece. This sizeable thermal pool has been a source of rejuvenation for centuries. Continuing our journey, we arrive in Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Pope Pius II. Renowned for its harmonious Renaissance architecture and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, Pienza enchants with its timeless charm and rich cultural heritage.

The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Our Group Leader will designate a convenient time and meeting spot to embark on our next adventure—visiting a local cheesemaker. Here, amidst the rustic beauty of the Tuscan countryside, we'll indulge in a delightful tasting experience, sampling a variety of artisanal pecorino and creamy ricotta cheeses, all crafted with care on the property. From the robust flavors of aged pecorino to the delicate sweetness of freshly made ricotta, each cheese promises to tantalize our taste buds and showcase the region's authentic flavors. After immersing ourselves in Tuscan cheese-making, we'll board the bus and journey back to Siena.

In our hotel meeting room, we'll delve into the history of the Siena Palio during an enlightening lecture. Originating in the Middle Ages, the Palio is a thrilling horse race that occurs twice yearly (July 2 and August 16) in the heart of Siena's historic center, showcasing the city's rich tradition and fierce neighborhood rivalries. As we learn about the pageantry and excitement surrounding this iconic event, we'll understand its significance to the people of Siena. Following the lecture, we'll embark on a short walk to a local contrada hall, where we'll enjoy an intimate glimpse into the pride and camaraderie of Siena's vibrant neighborhoods. Inside the hall, chapel, and small museum, we'll immerse ourselves in the colorful history and culture of the contrade, gaining insight into their traditions, symbols, and deep-rooted sense of community.

Afternoon:
Embark on a bus excursion as we travel to the storied city of San Gimignano, where the magic of the medieval era lingers in every corner. Our local expert will lead us on a remarkable journey, delving into this Etruscan town's history and architectural marvels. Marvel at the well-preserved medieval aspect that permeates the streets, a testament to the city's rich heritage. Once a town adorned with an astonishing 77 towers, each vying for prominence in family rivalries, San Gimignano offers a glimpse into the fascinating dynamics of medieval society. Discover the intrigue behind these towering structures, symbols of power and status strategically built throughout the town. Leaving the confines of San Gimignano, we embark on a short coach ride, venturing a few miles outside the town to an organic farm. Here, amidst the peaceful Tuscan countryside, we uncover the intricate process behind producing extra-virgin olive oil and cultivating local wines. After our farm visit, we will relish a wine-tasting experience just before dinner. This delightful session will allow us to savor the local Chianti and Vernaccia varieties.

In a classroom session at the hotel led by our Group Leader, we will delve into the intricate tapestry of Italian society, exploring its regional nuances and the profound influence of national institutions that continue to shape the lives of its residents with a lecture on Italy today. After a short break, we will meet for an expert-led city orientation walk that will end in the Piazza del Campo. This expansive square is honored to host the legendary Palio horse race, a spectacle that enthralls spectators every July and August. After, we will continue to the Palazzo Pubblico, still serving as the town hall today. One of the rooms contains an influential fresco cycle depicting the Allegory of Good and Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and a fresco of Guidoriccio da Fogliano on horseback. Scholars have long attributed the work to the 14th-century Sienese painter Simone Martini, and our local expert will explain the controversy concerning the fresco's reattribution to a much later artist. Our expert-led field trip will continue onto the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex collection. Once a sanctuary of solace and care for those in need, this historic institution has evolved into a repository of artistic treasures.

We leave our luggage outside our rooms to be transported to our awaiting hotel in Florence. With our hands free, we will walk to the Siena bus station, conveniently located just across the street from our hotel. There, we board a regional rapid transit bus bound for Florence.

Afternoon:
After lunch, we’ll take a neighborhood walk to orient ourselves in Florence and get familiar with the local surroundings. Following the walk, we'll check in at the hotel and have some time to refreshen up before heading out in the late afternoon. We will walk to the Accademia for an expert-led visit to one of the most famous statues in the world, Michelangelo's David. The David stands as an enduring masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture and one of the world's most iconic works of art. Housed within the Galleria dell'Accademia, this awe-inspiring statue mesmerizes visitors with its exceptional craftsmanship and powerful depiction of the biblical figure. Carved by Michelangelo from a single block of marble between 1501 and 1504, David stands tall at over 17 feet and charms viewers with its remarkable level of detail and lifelike representation. From the intricate musculature to the intense gaze and the poised stance, David embodies the physical and spiritual strength that epitomized the Renaissance era. Beyond the David, we can explore an impressive collection of Renaissance artworks, including sculptures, paintings, and musical instruments. The museum also houses Michelangelo's unfinished sculptures, known as the Prisoners, which provide valuable insights into the artist's creative process. It has been suggested that Michelangelo left them in their incomplete state to symbolize the struggle of humankind to free the spirit from matter. Kindly note that the significant volume of visitors may present difficulties in obtaining an unobstructed view of the most renowned works; anticipate encountering crowded conditions during our visit.

We’ll begin our city walk in Florence's historical center, or centro storico, exploring some of the city's most iconic landmarks. Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, was once the center of art, culture, and politics in Italy, and these historic sites offer us a glimpse into the city’s pivotal role in shaping the world. This walk will give us an insightful look into Florence's rich history, from medieval roots to Renaissance glory. Our first stop will be the exterior of Orsanmichele, a church built as a grain market in the 14th century. Its distinctive architectural style features Gothic elements, adorned with saints sculptures by renowned artists such as Donatello, Ghiberti, and Verrocchio. We’ll continue our walk to the Medici Chapels, one of Florence’s most extraordinary and historically significant sites. These chapels house the tombs of the powerful Medici family, who were patrons of the arts and rulers of Florence for several centuries. The chapels are part of the larger San Lorenzo complex, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, with the Medici Chapels later transformed by Michelangelo into a masterpiece of Renaissance art and architecture. The New Sacristy, designed by Michelangelo, is a stunning example of his genius, showcasing his sculptural works such as The Tomb of Lorenzo de’ Medici and The Tomb of Giuliano de’ Medici. These works are celebrated for their dynamic composition, powerful symbolism, and intricate details, exemplifying Michelangelo’s deep understanding of human emotion and form. The chapels also feature breathtaking marble and frescoes that highlight the Medici family’s influence and wealth, as well as their lasting legacy in art and politics.

Immerse yourself in Renaissance art as we gather in the hotel's meeting room. Here, we will be joined by a local art historian whose expertise will unlock the secrets and beauty of this transformative historical period. Through an illustrated presentation, we will shed light on the masterpieces that grace the renowned collection of the Galleria degli Uffizi. We set out on foot to the esteemed Galleria degli Uffizi for a timed and reserved entrance. Stepping through the doors, we will be enveloped in a world of artistic wonders during our self-directed journey in this world-renowned museum, where we can explore at our own pace. The arrangement of the works within the Uffizi follows a thoughtfully curated order, steering through a visual chronicle of artistic evolution. Witness the majestic progression from the intricate details of the International Gothic style to the audacious and innovative expressions of Baroque art. Glimpse the ethereal beauty of Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Leonardo da Vinci's enigmatic Annunciation, delight in the vivid colors and dynamic energy of works by Michelangelo and Raphael, and marvel at the exquisite brushwork and emotive compositions that define the Baroque period, as exemplified by masterpieces crafted by luminaries such as Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. There is a coffee bar at the end of the corridor on the Second Floor (upper level) where you can relax and purchase refreshments while enjoying a commanding view of the bell tower of Palazzo Vecchio and the cupola of the Duomo. Kindly note that the significant volume of visitors may present difficulties in obtaining an unobstructed view of the most renowned works; anticipate encountering crowded conditions during our visit.
