Welcome the new year by attending the annual Rose Parade®. It's the dazzling explosion of color, creativity and tradition that kicks off the New Year with a bang. It’s the flower-covered floats like moving masterpieces, bands marching to lively tunes and the palpable, infectious excitement of the crowd. It's the blend of nostalgia and spectacle, where every bloom tells a story, and every step feels like a celebration. The Rose Parade® in Pasadena, California, isn’t just a parade — it's a communal experience that brings people together.
Activity Level
On Your Feet
Walking up to one mile per day, standing for several hours, climbing stairs and sitting on bleacher seats without backs. Bandfest, Rose Parade®, and Floatfest occur rain or shine, be prepared to enjoy these events in wet weather.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Learn the fascinating history of the parade from a Tournament of Roses® insider, and hear from a past Rose Queen about her reign.
  • Attend Bandfest to watch the performances and shows.
  • Become a part of the spectacle as you help decorate one of the elaborate Rose Parade® floats, attend the parade itself and view floats up close after the parade.

General Notes

One of the most popular events, this event draws large crowds with about 1 million people viewing the parade in person each year. This is also a popular program for Road Scholar which makes it a large group program. The program enrolls up to 600 people divided between two hotels. Participants will be with the large group for most of the activities and lectures, participants will be divided into smaller groups for orientation and travel to activities. If you are interested in seeing the Rose Parade® in a smaller group, take a look "The Best of California: The Reagan Library to the Channel Islands" (#14491) that also begins on December 28.

Dinner:
In the hotel banquet room.
Evening:
Introductions: time for getting to know one another better and what we may have in common beyond a love of learning. Then settle in, relax, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a motorcoach. Depending on the float organization, we will work a minimum of 6 hours and a maximum of 8 hours including a lunch break. You will be standing, bending, and reaching while working on floats as directed by float organizers. Some floats will require an early morning departure, as early as 6:00 a.m., from the hotel. Please read the "Special Notes" section for more details about float decorating.
Breakfast:
In the hotel banquet room.
Morning:
This is what you’ve been waiting for: experience the magic that goes into actually creating the Rose Parade® floats! We’ll transfer you in your color groups by motorcoach to one of the "float barns" to work alongside experienced professionals and help apply materials under their guidance. Rose Parade® rules require that every inch of each float be covered with flowers or other natural materials such as fruits, vegetables, leaves, seeds, or bark. Our participation will be a significant factor since parade officials estimate that it takes 60 volunteers working 10 hours a day for 10 days to decorate just one float.
Lunch:
At your float decorating site.
Afternoon:
Continue decorating a float/floats at your designated facility. Afterwards, we will return to the hotel.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a motorcoach. Seats for Bandfest are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Early arrival to get a good seat involves standing in line 30-60 minutes until the stadium opens. To enter the stadium, climb a flight of stairs. To reach the seats, go down stairs (elevator available in rear of stadium). Our metal bleacher seats have backs, but you may wish to bring a stadium cushion since we will be seated for several hours. Small backpacks are allowed; no clear bag policy.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
From the hotel, we will transfer by motorcoach to a local auditorium for a series of morning presentations. We will hear from members of an equestrian unit that will appear in the Rose Parade®. They will share information about the application process and what it takes to participate in the very special tradition. The equestrian talents are a unique aspect of the parade entertainment. Next will be a talk given by a member of the Community Relations Committee of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses® Association. We will learn about the parade and, in particular, the 935 “White Suiters”. These volunteers wear clearly distinctive uniforms and work tirelessly to ensure the success of the parade and football game. We will then meet a former Rose Queen who will share her personal story about the Rose Queen selection process and responsibilities. Through an intensive selection process, the Tournament of Roses® “Queen and Court” committee seeks participants with the best combination of poise, personality, public speaking ability and scholastic achievement. Approximately a thousand young women from over two dozen area high schools apply each year. They are required to complete a detailed application and meet age and academic requirements. Those selected meet in person with the committee members over the course of a month. Approximately 250 are invited to return for further interviews, then 75, then about 25 finalists. The committee selects the Royal Court from this group.
Lunch:
Boxed lunches will be distributed before boarding the bus to Bandfest. We will arrive to Pasadena City College (the site of Bandfest) early in order to be one of the first to enter the stadium. A boxed lunch provides you with the flexibility to eat while we wait for the afternoon performance (either inside or outside of the stadium). You may choose to eat your lunch while waiting in line or you may opt to enjoy your lunch while sitting on the grass - Pasadena City College does not have any formal picnic areas on campus. There are few benches outside the stadium.
Afternoon:
Marching in the Rose Parade® is a coveted honor, with bands from all over the world as well as some of the nation's top high school, college, and organizational marching bands participating. While a few of these bands are invited guests, most compete for a limited number of spaces. The winners take part in Bandfest — a two-day event that displays each band and its auxiliary performers in their victorious routines. We will watch these talented musicians, dancers, and auxiliary performers in action. Event occurs rain or shine, bring rain coats or ponchos in case it rains.
Dinner:
At a local restaurant.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a motorcoach. Walking and standing at your own pace at the Getty Center. Walking between the buildings at the museum on flat, paved surfaces; access to the bottom of the Central Gardens involves a slight incline.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
For a change of pace, we will board the motorcoach and take a field trip to the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, which houses European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs. Jean Paul Getty was an American industrialist, who was named the richest living American and the world’s richest private citizen by the Guinness Book of World Records. An avid collector of art and antiquities, he established the J. Paul Getty Trust, which remains the world's wealthiest art institution. The Museum is accessed from the parking structure by a 3/4 mile hovertrain. The Getty Center is one of the most visited art museums in the United States and presents Getty's collection of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views. This stunning collection features works by Titian, Rembrandt, Manet, and Monet. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration of the Getty Center.
Lunch:
This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like on the grounds of the Getty Center. Make reservations for the restaurant by calling (310) 440-6810 or through OpenTable.
Afternoon:
Continue your free afternoon exploring the Getty Center. After the Getty Center, we’ll return to the hotel for dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel. Ring in the New Year with a champagne toast.
Evening:
New Year's Eve! We will celebrate together according to Eastern Standard Time. Get a good night's sleep, as tomorrow will be an exciting day! We will be departing the hotel early in the morning.
Activity Note
Motorcoaches depart the hotel for the parade as early as 5:45 a.m.; check your schedule for your exact departure time and location. Upon arrival (in front of Pasadena City College), we climb bleachers to our reserved seats. The metal bleacher seats do not have backs so as not to restrict leg room for people sitting behind. You may bring a seat cushion. Seat cushions with backs are allowed as long as there is no metal in the cushion or seat back. Small backpacks are allowed; no clear bag policy.
Breakfast:
Early at the hotel.
Morning:
The Rose Parade® is an unequaled spectacle and celebration of flowers, music, and sport. Pasadena greets each new year with spectacular pageantry. This is the 136th time this magnificent parade has rolled. As you watch the beautiful floats — including ours! — glide by, marvel at the brilliance and imagination that went into creating each and every one. After the parade, we will return to the hotel. The parade occurs rain or shine, bring rain coats or ponchos in case it rains. If you are planning to attend the football game after the parade and will not be returning with the group to the hotel, please inform your group leader.
Lunch:
In the hotel banquet room.
Afternoon:
Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Please note that the period scheduled for free time is subject to change depending on local circumstances and opportunities for independent exploration. If you are interested in attending the Rose Bowl Game® during your free time, make arrangements well in advance.
Dinner:
At the hotel. Share favorite experiences and enjoy camaraderie with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.
Evening:
At the hotel, we’ll enjoy live musical entertainment just for us! Prepare for check-out and departure in the morning.
Activity Note
Check out of the hotel before our field trip; take luggage to the front desk for holding. Airport transportation should be arranged in advance. Motorcoaches depart for Floatfest at 6:15 a.m. At Floatfest, roundtrip walking distance is 2.4 miles; elevation change is 80’ loss in the first 0.7 miles; return to bus includes 80’ elevation gain in the last 0.7 miles. No seating along route. Only clear bags allowed. Other bags can be left on the bus. Event staff may search any bags or purses.
Breakfast:
Early at the hotel.
Morning:
After every Rose Parade®, the floral masterpieces are parked and on exhibition for the public to examine the design and workmanship that goes into these floats in close detail—a Pasadena tradition for more than a century. You can walk almost within arm's reach to appreciate the imagination and work that created these floral displays. Bring your camera! The event occurs rain or shine, bring rain coats or ponchos in case it rains. We will return to the hotel by approximately 11:00 a.m. This concludes our program. If you are returning home, safe travels. If you are staying on independently, have a wonderful time. If you are transferring to another Road Scholar program, detailed instructions are included in your Information Packet for that program. We hope you enjoy Road Scholar learning adventures and look forward to having you on rewarding programs in the future. Don’t forget to join our Facebook page and follow us on Instagram. Best wishes for all your journeys!

The Rose Parade: A Heritage to Celebrate Road Scholar program is amazing! I loved everything about it, from decorating floats, to listening to bands, to seeing the parade, and to attending Float Fest. It fulfilled a lifelong dream for me, as it did for many others in my group. Having a day at the Getty was a bonus!

My Rose Parade experience was a dream come true! In order of excitement, the Rose Parade itself, followed by up close viewing of the floats during Float Fest and then helping behind the scenes on the floats themselves. It was great to see the process, participate and then point at the floats we worked on. Amazing to see the final presentation. Highly recommend this program.

I had a great time learning about the parade and all the local traditions. The start times were super early, so if you are not a morning person you may have trouble keeping up. Other than that, great fun, loved getting to decorate the float and see the behind the scenes. Such a bucket list adventure!

I loved this trip and would consider doing it again (after I've visited some other must see places). Even though I could do it cheaper on my own, the camaraderie, transportation logistics, and dare I say effortlessness of my first Road Scholar trip was worth every penny.

I was very pleased with all aspects of the trip except food and beverages and weather :(. For the most part it was cafeteria food. New Years' Eve dinner and dessert was very pleasant. The soup for lunch was all the left overs combined together from the day before. Dessert was from the night before with a combo sauce we believe was a combination of left over fruit from previous days pureed together. The chicken wrap was nothing more than a tortilla, chicken, and wimpy lettuce; no condiments at all. And often, coffee was in short supply and the coffee bar wasn't even available on the last morning. Loved Colleen who was in charge of the "orange " group. Best, Lori Steinmetz

This is an amazing program if you've ever seen and wondered about the Rose Parade, hoped to see a million flowers and floats up close, wanted to work on a float, remember marching in a band when you were a kid and wanted to see LA! Highly recommended!!

So interesting to learn about how the Rose Parade comes together, and its many aspects. Particularly enjoyed seeing and helping with the behind-the-scenes work on putting the floats together, and then being able to see the floats up close the day after. Due to the size and location, this was not my typical RS experience, but provided the unique educational and experiential activities that I value from Road Scholar!

Road Scholar Rose Parade was an exceptional experience. Going behind the scenes to watch and help floats being built, having a past Rose queen speak about her experiences as a 17 year old, having great seats for the parade and attending the Float Fest afterwards were all highlites of a great program.

Decorating floats to get a sense of how detailed the process is and being able to see the completed floats at Float Fest the day after were the highlights of this trip. Watching the parade on TV for years, my goal to see it in person was fulfilled. The trip, the tour leaders and the educational experiences were outstanding.

This "bucket list" Road Scholar program was everything we hoped for, and more. Cutting bikini yellow roses for the Louisiana float was tiring but a real pleasure. The lectures were interesting, especially the one by the former Rose Queen. The museums were fascinating and the Band Fest event was excellent, even in the rain. The Rose Parade is a marvel. We didn't have to worry about driving or tickets or where to go. The hotel was very comfortable and the meals filling and tasty. As usual, the guides were cheerful, gracious, and knowledgeable. Note: This program has a large number of participants, although it is broken up into groups of 30+, and most of the activities start very early. We attended the Rose Bowl Game on our own, which was marvelous, but challenging to get to and much more challenging to get out of.

The Behind the Scenes at the Rose Parade program allowed me to learn so much about an event I have been watching on TV my whole life. Being involved with decorating the floats, hearing from parade organizers & participants, seeing the parade in person, and going to the band and float fests allowed me to truly appreciate this event.

Enjoyed the trip and program over all. It was fun and I may go on another one at some time. Pink leader was great. Areas for improvement- 1. Volunteering was for a Lutheran group. Should have been for a general non profit not religious. Had I known this probably wouldn't have signed up. 2. While volunteering the group we were supporting did not provide water or snacks but sold them. Really??! They benefited from our labor and could at least have provided water. But evangelical materials were provided at no cost. 3. Meals provided were ok but boring. Chicken almost every day lunch and dinner. Breakfast was the same each day, scrambled eggs, sausage, fried potatoes. Someone with a clue needs to work with catering on more variety. 4. Transportation to hotel. Either use hotels with airport shuttles or provide shuttle from the FlyAway depot to hotel. Other transport was expensive or hard to get.

The Road Scholar Rose Parade 2022 was a joy. It was fun to do. They handled everything well under difficult traffic and pandemic conditions. Enough free time to relax.

If you are up-to seeing 'behind the scenes' of decorating the Rose Parade floats for both and in-person and hands-on experience, then this once-a-year tour is for you. Likewise, is attending and view the Rose Parade itself!

FOR ROAD SCHOLAR ONLY!! NOT WEB SITE Web site prior to program seemed very delayed in sharing information.. I was frustrated several times making inquire and having to wait days for response.. Simple questions.. Is the Program going on?? etc when wil the Discussion Boards open? Who and how many on my groups ? Difference in Hotel.. Location to events and COSTS ! ONCE the information packet came out I felt much more "settled".. The SAME is true for our next program (Spain and Portugal ) .. I FULLY realize you dont have magic ball with Covid and international laws, but please just write and keep me focused and motivated.. Just reassure me you are following the situation.. a "NEWSBRIEF".. Thanks.. See you soon. Nicole did a wonderful job in pulling all these threads together!!!! Thank you NICOLE

This trip was everything I wished for and more. Anyone can go to the Rose Parade, but only with Road Scholar will you get to be a part of the parade. Our first day we were able to work on a self-built float. We actually put lemon leaves on a part of the float. When the float came down the street, we were so proud. They also sold cards for $2 that entitled you to have someone's name inside the float. We got to see Band Fest, meet a former queen, have a discussion with the men who are in charge of the "White Suiter" volunteers, and hear how the floats are judged from an expert on roses . We spent an afternoon at the Getty Center and had a visit from mini therapy horses who marched in the parade. The final day we were able to view the floats up close. We had wonderful bleacher seats for the parade. Every minute we felt that we were a part of the parade. We just loved this experience. The coordination effort needed to pull this off is huge. We had 412 Road Scholars, in two hotels. We were divided into about 11 groups and everything ran like clockwork. We were very impressed.

All my life I had dreamed of going to the Rose Parade and seeing its flower-covered floats up close. To be able to help prep those flowers, and see the float decorating firsthand, and learn more about the Tournament of Roses in general, and wander among the parked floats the following day--who could ask for more?

What a terrific time I had with 400+ of my dearest friends! I was in the Violet group of 42, and Teri was a great leader. We had to be up and out the door by 6, and we were kept busy. We helped build a float, and ours won the Sweepstakes award in the Parade. We enjoyed Bandfest, and learned how the judging is done, and learned about the organization, and got to hear from a past queen. On our “ off day” we enjoyed the Getty museum. It’s hard to believe this experience was only 4 days!

You will learn so much about how the floats are made, participate in decorating a float, have great seats to view the parade, enjoy a concert by bands who will march in the parade, and have informative lectures on the Rose Bowl Celebration!

Road Scholar has been doing this for years and they have it down to a first- class science, commanding private lectures by the powers-behind-the Parade in sumptuous surroundings. Hotels and transportation top of the line. Seeing and participating in float construction is the greatest experience, and it comes the first day! Do this! Great fun.

This program followed the description exactly. We were very actively involved in the float barns which was very satisfying (often as a volunteer you stand around with no specific job) but we were needed and really contributed. The presentations were interesting and informative and really revealed what a huge undertaking this parade is. The hilton was comfortable and the trip to the Getty wonderful. Edie as a group leader was one of the best of all my Road Scholar trips! Thanks Edie! (and Mike, Mike, Mike)

Each trip I have taken with Road Scholar has been well organized and a great experience. I went on the Rose Parade trip as I had done it as a child growing up in California. Now the parade route has bleachers and many more people attending. We also got to help decorate the floats and did side trips to the Getty museum and Band Fest. We celebrated New Years with the group and it was a great way to bring in the New Year. I am looking forward to my 2 trip later this year!!!

I love my RS trips as I explained to my family - a six days trip I don't worry about driving, cooking, washing a dish or even making a bed! The Hilton was a dream with fluffy pillows on top of large king size beds. But you don't get to sleep in on this trip (luckily I still work so getting up at 5 AM is easy for me) with good coffee & tasty meals with sweet desserts that was a daily treat! All 475 of us strangers organized in color coded teams as we went to the float barns, the BandFest, a delightful speaker who teaches the judges, & a lovely lunch I reserved at the Getty Museum with my new friends. You had a designated ticket on the Parade route with a handy restroom behind you so you don't feel overwhelmed. I found each day was a great learning experience with our fabulous Leader Jenny! Thank you RS!

Since the Rose Parade is presented only once each year, our group of participants was larger than I would normally prefer. Seeing how well it was handled by the Road Scholar staff, I would expect an even greater experience with a smaller group. I am looking forward to another "tour" & would recommend Road Scholars very highly.
