It was built not far from the larger town of Seville, then known as Hispalis, for the veterans of the Second Punic Wars against Carthage. Its name is a reference to the veterans’ Italic heritage. The town hosts an extensive aqueduct and cistern system as well as a major amphitheater—the third largest in the Empire at the time. Later, on returning to Seville we will attend our group language class.

We will enjoy a cultural class on the Moors and Andalucía. The Moors ruled parts of Andalucía from the early 8th until the late 15th centuries—800 years of history. Their legacy is considerable, with two of the region’s most important monuments—the Alcazar of Seville and Granada's Alhambra—dating from this period. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Moors left an outstanding cultural legacy behind them in Al-Andalús, or "Andalucía" as it is today.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant, we will have a group lunch. Glass of wine and water included; other beverages available to purchase.
Afternoon:
We will set out for an expert-led cultural visit of the Alcazar on foot, a royal palace built in the 14th century, in the last stages of the Reconquista of the Iberian peninsula, on the remains of a Moorish fort dating from the 10th century. It was built for the Christian king Peter of Castile and is one of the most prominent examples of Moorish-influenced architecture in Iberia.

Morning:
We will depart early by motorcoach for the 3-hour journey to the city of Granada. Upon arrival, we will enjoy an expert-led visit of the spectacular Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens, led by a local English-speaking expert. The Alhambra was first built as a smaller fort around 889 CE before being expanded into a palace in the 11th century by the sultan of Granada. After the Reconquista, the palace fell into disuse for several centuries, to be restored once again in the 19th century. There are royal apartments, forts, gardens, pavilions, and sumptuous gardens, which offered protection from the summer heat.

At a local restaurant, we will enjoy lunch with a complimentary glass of wine and mineral water; other beverages available for purchase.

We will join our Group Leader for an exploration of the Albayzin, Granada's old Muslim enclave. Along with the Alhambra, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Sites include the Great Mosque of Granada, built in 2003 and the first built in the city since the Reconquista, and portions of the former city wall, known as Ziri, dating from the 8th century. The quarter, with its narrow streets, tile roofs, and views of the Alhambra, retains its Nasrid dynasty-era character.

We will enjoy a cultural class on Seville's Golden Age of the 16th century, following the completion of the Reconquista and the beginning of European colonization of the Americas. It was from Seville’s ports that ships set sail for the “new world” and its promise of riches. With this influx of commerce and people, the town grew into Spain’s largest city, aided by new taxes on trade and the expansion of existing universities and colleges. As a result, architecture, painting, and many other arts and trades flourished in this period until the 17th century, when the city declined due to economic crisis, the religious wars in Europe, and the plague of 1649, among other factors. Later we will enjoy a visit to the Museo Bellas Artes, founded in 1839 in a former convent built in 1594. The museum hosts works by mostly Spanish artists from the Middle Ages to today, including Golden Age paintings from artists of the 17th century.

With a local expert, we will see some of the most important highlights of historical Madrid via motorcoach. Calle Mayor dates back to 1580, though the oldest remaining buildings are from the late 1700s. La Gran Via is a bustling thoroughfare marked by many grand “edificios” that make it a showcase of early 20th century architecture. The Plaza de Cibeles, perhaps the most beautiful of Madrid’s grand squares, is named for the Roman goddess of nature. Plaza de Colón honors Christopher Columbus. The emblematic Puerta de Alcalá, once the ceremonial gateway to the city, now stands in the Plaza de la Independencia. La Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate) is the geographical center not only of Madrid, but all of Spain from which all road distances are measured—the Kilometre Zero. The Plaza Mayor is a majestic, arcaded square that was once a venue holding up to 50,000 observers and participants in events from festivals to royal coronations and even the occasional auto-da-fé.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant, we’ll enjoy lunch with mineral water and glass of wine; other beverages available for purchase.
Afternoon:
We will continue our exploration of the Spanish capital with an expert-led visit to El Prado. Spain's foremost national museum features one of the world's finest collections of European art, from the 12th century to the early 19th century, including works by Velazquez, Goya (the artist most extensively represented in the collection), Titian, Rubens, and Bosch.
Dinner:
On your own.
Evening:

Activity Note
High-speed train from Madrid to Seville about 335 miles, approximately 2.5 hours. Walking 2 – 3 miles today, cobble stones and uneven surfaces. Additional standing at the museum. Breakfast:
Hotel buffet.
Morning:
We will join a local English-speaking expert for a visit to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. The Reina Sofía opened its doors in 1990 as a modern, contemporary Spanish museum on an international scale. Its collection of more than 20,000 works includes masterpieces by Dalí, Miro, Picasso, and many others. Its most famous piece is Picasso’s “Guernica,” based on the bombing of that Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, but with broader symbolism as a plea against the barbarity and terror of all war.

Living and Learning in Sevilla was an unforgettable experience. The Spanish people, my fellow travelers, the instructors, leaders and guides all added to my experience. I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in Andalusia and its place in Spanish history.

The six weeks of the program flew by. I learned a lot more than I thought. The leader, teachers and all the staff were phenomenal. They made the trip great. They inspired me to go further in Spanish since I returned. I have a new respect for Spain and it's place in history.

This program was everything I had hoped it would be. The apartment was conveniently located in the historic district of Sevilla and nearly everything I wanted to see was within a 30 minute walk. The weekday classes in Spanish were excellent with compatible and enthusiastic instruction. Sevilla has so many historic treasures hidden behind plain exteriors and tucked away in surprising spots. Drivers on the single lane cobblestone streets were generally pleasant and patient with us pedestrians as we made our way to class, to meals or exploring. Food, wine, beer, and most restaurants were inexpensive. So many shoe stores! If all the cafes, churches, ice cream places and shoe stores were to disappear, Sevilla would be a ghost town! I only wish there was a Living and Learning in Sevilla 2.0 with different weekend trips and excursions... I would definitely return. I am hopeful that there may be a similar version of this program in the northern aspect of Spain... I would definitely go!

This is a great program if you want to learn more about Andalusia Spain and its culture and history. It is hard work, but well worth it if you are prepared to be open minded and have a sense of adventure and exploration. My husband and I are so glad we did it and would sign up today if there was another program in Spain. You are well supported, but have a ton of opportunities to make this your adventure.

I fulfilled a dream for six weeks living in the beautiful city of Sevilla. I learned and I was challenged. Instructors, Guides and Leaders were knowledgable and interesting. I felt safe to live independently there. My love for Spain only deepened with this experience.

An exciting six week adventure of (as titled) Living and Learning in Sevilla. The fifteen classmates of our group "came, saw, and conquered more than just basic Spanish; we made local friends and explored the city's landmarks and cuisine! Learning a new language in your late 50s to early 80s (as our group was distributed) was challenging but the support of the other group members really enhanced the process. It was an adventure we won't forget.

If there is a better way to start learning a language, I have not found it yet. This RS immersion program was the best! The program presented so many opportunities for learning outside of the classroom, weekend trips to other cities (the hotels were VERY nice!) and cultural experiences that went far beyond any I had during shorter trips to or through a country. As always, the group leader was Top Notch! Silvia was brilliant, energetic, exceptionally kind and organized...And just a great human being! Our Spanish instructor had an excellent command of English, a love of her country and its language only a Nacido Sevillano could possess, and the patience of a saint. Of course I'm not fluent in Spanish after only six weeks of instruction, but I have a good foundation on which to build (which I intend to do). Lastly, the group who shared this journey with me was the absolute BEST. Whether it will be in Spanish or English, in the US (or Canada, PW) or again in Spain, I look forward to speaking with them and/or getting together for years to come.

This was one of the best trips that I have taken in my life. It was extremely well organized, with a nice balance of scheduled activities and free time. The group leader, Covadonga Hortal, has the perfect skills and personality for her job, and the Spanish language teachers were wonderful. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who is interested in Spanish language and culture.

What a wonderful experience! The program was fun, educational and life changing. Our group leader, Covadonga Hortal, was the best tour guide I've ever had. She knew about the history, art, architecture and current events of the area in great detail, and was more than generous with her time and knowledge. I feel like this program opened up a new world for me.

Seville is a wonderful, charming place, and the program makes it possible to live in a lovely apartment right in the heart of the old city. The program is well run and a nice mix of cultural talks or experiences, language classes, and free time. The program director, Sofia Cruz, was superb. There are many cafes and restaurants to enjoy either near the apartment or near the school, and of course it's fun to purchase food locally and cook in the apartment. There is a fair amount of walking on uneven pavements and cobblestones, but it is certainly reasonable for almost all persons. The language classes are intensive (and long: 10 am to 1:30 pm, with a half hour break). What I remember most fondly is the fragrance of the orange blossoms all around the city. It's a great winter get-away for those of us from cold places. Our particular program was cut short by the coronavirus shutdown in Spain and the US, but I would certainly like to experience this program again in Seville another time.

I absolutely loved this program, if you are having any doubts, don't worry, just go ( but I would study spanish prior so that one has a good foundation, since the language classes dive right in and get you speaking spanish immediately) RS does any amazing job on all levels; from the guides, to accommodations, to food, to transportation, to experiences

This trip was exceptional. The group leader was prepared and worked hard to keep everyone happy. Saville was a beautiful city and its culture was astonishing. The food was hit or miss with the tapas being a bit of a disappointment. In the nicer restaurants they were terrific but the smaller restaurant you were better off ordering a meal. The apartment was livable but the kitchen was not equipped for anything but fried food and cold lunches. It was centrally located . The description of gthe program said it was walking 2-3 miles a day but it actually was much more like 4-6 and some days more. ALL IN ALL A WONDERFUL TRIP.
