Dinner:
At the hotel, we'll have a welcome meal
Evening:
At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 35 miles, approximately 1.5 hours riding time. Walking about 1.5 miles; paved, mostly flat surfaces; some stair climbing and standing. Water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, tennis shoes with ankle support recommended. Closed-toes/heel shoes are mandatory when visiting Panama Canal installations.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
Early, at the hotel, we will attend an expert presentation on the past, present, and future of the Panama Canal with a special look at its administrative models and economic impacts. Then we’ll board our Road Scholar bus and ride to the historic colonial center of the city of Panama, Casco Viejo, for a walking field trip led by our Group Leader. Casco Viejo dates back to the 1670s and showcases the multicultural history of Panama. Parks and narrow streets are lined with colorful buildings in a breath-taking mix of Spanish, French, and early American architectural styles. This eclectic display reflects the city's role as an international trade center and cultural melting pot that began well before the building of the Canal. Some of Casco Viejo's must-see sites include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Municipal Palace, the National Theater, the Panama Canal Museum (originally the Grand Hotel), the French Embassy, and the Plaza de Francia. Next, we'll head to the Panama Canal Museum to learn about the American era of the Panama Canal and explore the second-floor exhibits dedicated to its history from beginning to completion.
Lunch:
At a restaurant.
Afternoon:
We will board the bus and ride on to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center. Upon arrival we will accompany our Group Leader on an informative walk through the museum’s exhibits before visiting one of the observation terraces to witness the locks and motorized mules at work.
Dinner:
At a restaurant.
Evening:
After the bus drops us off at the hotel, the remainder of the evening will be at leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 133 miles, approximately 4 hours total riding time throughout the day. Walking up to 2 miles during the day on mostly flat, paved surfaces; some steps.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
After boarding the bus, we’ll ride across the Bridge of the Americas to reach the Mirador de las Americas and the Chinese Monument. We'll disembark at the mirador and accompany our Group Leader on foot to explore the monument and learn about the role of Chinese immigrants in helping build the country’s infrastructure. Then we’ll get back on our bus and ride on to the Panama Canal Administration Building. Once there, we will follow our Group Leader up the staircase and into the building to learn more about the Canal construction through the vibrant murals by William B. Van Ingen that illustrate different stages of the project. Our visit will conclude with a stop at the marble monument dedicated to the canal’s chief engineer George W. Goethals. Next, we'll ride northward to Lake Alajuela for a quick stop to view and learn about Madden Dam. While there, our Group Leader will tell us about the impact of Lake Alajuela/Madden Dam on the lives of people in the region and in the daily operation of the Panama Canal. We’ll then head to the New Locks Visitor Center/Agua Clara Locks to learn about the expansion of the Canal. Our Group Leader and a center representative will lead us through exhibits, including a video on the expansion project and construction of the new locks, and photos documenting various stages of the construction. The project cost an estimated $5.25 billion to add a third lane with larger locks, thus making it possible for bigger container and cargo ships to make use of the shortcut. We’ll make a stop at the Center’s viewing platform before returning to the bus and riding across the scenic Atlantic Bridge on our way to the Gatún Dam, power-generating plants and spillway. The cable-stayed bridge was completed in 2019 and extends 1.75 miles over the Canal's Atlantic entrance. Afterwards we will continue our journey to Fort San Lorenzo - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lunch:
At Fort San Lorenzo, picnic-style.
Afternoon:
After lunch, we’ll accompany our Group Leader on a walking exploration of Fort San Lorenzo. As we examine the historic ruins and learn about the fort’s strategic location, we’ll gain a better understanding of its importance as a primary defense point in the Caribbean from the Colonial Era through World War II. The original fortifications were erected in 1595, but were rebuilt and modified a few times over the centuries due to attacks from pirates and other countries. In fact, the neo-classical military architecture seen today is what remains of the final round of rebuilding that took place during the late 18th century. The historic stronghold is now part of a larger protected area known as San Lorenzo National Park and includes forests, mangroves, and wetlands on the western banks of the Panama Canal. Next, we’ll reboard the bus and begin our journey back to our Panama City hotel. We’ll make a brief stop at Las Cruces Trail to see the trailhead and learn about the historical connection between the trail and the California Gold Rush. The bus will deliver us to the hotel so we can drop off our gear and freshen up before reconvening for dinner.
Dinner:
At a local restaurant, located a short walk from our hotel.
Evening:
Returning to the hotel, the remainder of the evening is at leisure. Prepare for check out and departure early in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off bus; about 50 miles, approximately 2 hours riding time. Full transit through Panama Canal can take between 12-13 hours depending on ship traffic.
Breakfast:
Aboard the boat.
Morning:
We'll check out then ride to the port for embarkation. We will be ready to start our Canal adventure after the Panama Canal Commission Pilot, who will guide our vessel throughout the transit, comes on board. During our full day transit through the Panama Canal, we’ll be accompanied by a Canal expert who will enhance our experience with historical insights and detailed explanations of the transit process. By Canal standards, we are aboard a small vessel, so we will travel in tandem with a large ship. This saves water as the canal opens and closes the gates. The transit will take us through Miraflores Lake, Pedro Miguel Locks, Gailard Cut, Gamboa, and Gatun Lake.
Lunch:
Aboard the boat.
Afternoon:
We will continue transiting the Panama Canal until we reach Colon. After disembarking at Colon, we'll take a bus ride to Gamboa and check in at our hotel. The small town of Gamboa is located on the Chagres River, less than 20 miles from Panama City. It is an area graced by wetlands and tropical rainforests that support great biodiversity. These lush forests also provide water to Gatún Lake and the Panama Canal's Atlantic locks.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare a day pack with personal items you may need during the day and have the rest of your luggage ready for transport to the hotel in Panama City.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving approximately 10 minutes into the hotel vicinity. Getting in/out of motorized boats; navigating approximately 20 minutes each way. Walking up to 1.5 miles, approximately 2.5 hours on mostly flat, unpaved terrain, potential mud. It is not mandatory to bring anything to donate to the village; however, anyone wishing to do so might consider bringing school supplies such as pencils and erasers, coloring pens/pencils, books in Spanish, etc. to donate during the visit.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
After breakfast we’ll accompany our Group Leader on a nature walk on the hotel grounds. During our explorations we will examine native flora and search for birds and other wildlife that inhabit this forested area along the Chagres River. Then we will check out, ride the bus to a local dock and board motorized boats that will take us on a scenic journey up the Chagres River to an Embera village. After being welcomed ashore by members of the community we'll meet the village chief who will talk to us about the history of the Embera people, their way of life, culture, and handicraft traditions. We will walk through the village to learn about their homes, communal spaces, and botanical garden.
Lunch:
At the village, traditional lunch prepared by the Emberá women.
Afternoon:
We will have a bit of independent time to see Emberá handicrafts such as woodcarvings and woven baskets. The sale of their products benefits the village and helps to pay the school fees for the children. Those who like can also get a temporary Emberá tattoo painted on their arm or leg (lasts about 2 weeks). The blue-black stain used to create the traditional geometric tatoos is made from unripe jagua fruit (Genipa americana) that grows in abundance in the area. We'll say farewell to the village as we board the boats and make our way back to where the bus awaits to take us to the hotel.
Dinner:
At the hotel. While we dine, a folkloric dance group will give us a performance in traditional Panamanian dress. Share favorite experiences with new Road Scholar friends during our last evening together.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check out and departure in the morning.
Activity Note
Hotel check-out by 12:00 noon. See your program’s "Getting There" information regarding transfers.

A trip through the Panama Canal, I think, should be on everyone's bucket list. This program was the way to do it, as not only was the transit itself "up front and personal" but the surrounding program gave a great context to the history, operations, and current context of the canal's role in the world, which truly deepens the experience. With seamless arrangements to boot.

Panama Canal Grit and Glory was marvelous. Small all woman's group(13) was wonderful and I would highly recommend the program. I felt like I got VIP tours of places. I made friends with everyone on the trip and was totally surprised at this, as I had not expected it.

The Road Scholar tour, Grit and Glory: Exposing the Panama Canal, tells a fascinating history, but this tour is not for everyone. The RS itinerary and visual experience focuses largely on water, concrete, and engineering. Also, in my opinion, RS accommodations and food are substandard (with a few exceptional meals) — i.e. repetitive buffet meals, older hotels with minimal maintenance, and locations without any neighborhood or walkability. Also, considerable time is spent on buses traveling on highways through, but not really experiencing, the rainforest. RS does augment their canal focus with a few hours at the historic district, Cosco Viejo. However, on most days I felt we traveled way too far from the US for such a limited experience — especially since the Panama Canal Museum/Visitor Center was closed for refurbishment and has been closed for years (this was not disclosed prior to registration). Only the IMAX movie was open. Others have said museum was the highlight and with renovation and updates will be even more grand. So, It should be an essential component of the canal tour. I’d suggest not scheduling your canal tour until the museum reopens. A better tour experience would include many additional sights and certainly not such a heavy focus on abandoned or declining military structures. For example, we experienced nothing of the modern city and its relationship to the canal; just stayed in an old hotel in a declining part of Panama City on the last night of the tour. In my opinion, when traveling such long distance from US or other countries a 6-day tour of Panama should be more inclusive of Panama’s diversity — not just the canal and the old town, which can probably be better accomplished in just two days.

The trip was fantastic. The Tour guides, Patricio Roca, Cristian Moreno and Ella(last name unknown) as well as instructors Edwin Miranda and Jaime Robleto made the trip very informative. The only change or request would have been to stay 2 nights as the Gamboa Rain forest Resort in Colon. I do understand that with early morning flights it would be difficult to get everyone to the airport on time. Of course the best part of the trip was going completely through the canal.

The hosts covered every aspect of the Panama Canal. After touring the Visitor Centers at the old and new locks, transiting the entire canal through the old locks on a private cruise, going across all three bridges, driving past some relics of the French dig, we felt like the experience was complete.

The Panama Grit and Glory trip was fantastic! It was fascinating to learn about the long history of the Canal and the various engineering approaches. The initial visit for a close observation of a lock and the explanation of all the operations was an excellent background for the boat ride through the locks. The stay at the rainforest resort was also quite enjoyable. The resort itself was beautiful, and we saw a lot of wildlife on our short morning nature walk. Our guides were great. Both were extremely knowledgeable, fun to spend time with, and very patient. We had an unfortunate incident where a tour member got injured and had to be taken to the hospital. The guide was calmly competent and kept the rest of us informed so that we could send encouraging messages to the injured traveler. We highly recommend this tour.

Grit and Glory: Exposing the Panama Canal was a fascinating trip, and the intrigue extended beyond the Canal itself, to include local culture, flora, and fauna. The educational content was accessible, so no need to be an engineer or mechanically-minded to enjoy the trip!

First off, we were very fortunate to have Luis as our leader. He was friendly, funny, well-organized, and provided a wealth of information about all aspects of life in Panama. Our speakers & guides along the canal were also top notch and our friendly group of 17 fellow scholars was exceptional. I was looking forward to spending from noon Monday until 10 am Tuesday at Gamboa Resort. I planned to hike the trails, take a boat ride on the Chagres, & walk into the little town of Gamboa to see the houses & buildings (where many American families lived until 1980) and to get a glimpse of life in the town today. Unfortunately, without my realizing it, our group was lodged at a golf course resort with nowhere to go within walking distance. The golf course is closed on Mondays & there were no RS activities from noon Monday until our departure at 10am Tues. (Luis did arrange for us to see the resort’s one sloth and a small butterfly house.) Luckily, a member of our group suggested a helicopter ride on Monday afternoon. Luis persistently made dozens of calls to arrange this. For $350 each, 9 of us flew in 3 small helicopters. It was a great experience! Two of the activities that I had been looking forward to (a walk through the French Cemetery & a driving tour of the historic sites in Colon) were on our itinerary, but for some reason we did not do them. We did drive along a perimeter road of Colon & saw a prison that was once the bakery for Americans living in the Canal Zone. One book that I recommend is Canal Zone Daughter: An American Childhood in Panama. It’s a fun and very informative description of what life was like for families living in the canal zone in the 1960s & 70s. This and other books recommended by RS were the perfect prelude to a truly great trip with so many interesting activities and learning experiences.

This was our first Road Scholar trip, and we loved it! The outstanding guides, Patrick and Alex, are highly knowledgeable in different areas and maintained a good mix of factual details and humor, while encouraging side conversations if you wanted to dig deeper on a topic. Canal history and engineering were nicely balanced with information about local flora and fauna, Panamanian culture and society, etc. Presentations were well-paced, and we found the portable listening devices helpful. We weren’t sure if we wanted to try Road Scholar or travel to Panama independently but now we’re convinced that we got more visits, more information and a whole lot more access to canal sites and insider knowledge (thank you, Edwin) than we could have on our own-- and we really enjoyed our travel companions! If you’re considering the Grit & Glory trip: (1) Road Scholar is sincere about NOT pushing souvenir stops-- something we appreciate in general-- but that means you can easily get to the end of the trip without having had any good opportunity to shop. If that's a priority for you, either purchase quickly on those opportunities you get (a free hour in Old Town, a grocery store stop and gift shops at the canal, museum and Gamboa resort), or consider booking an extra day. (2) The Gamboa Jungle Resort is truly a gem, with spectacular views, an incredible pool, a variety of jungle tours and a sloth rehabilitation facility nearby. We were divided about a full day vs. half day canal tour, as the half day gets you more time at the resort. One of us would have liked that, the other wouldn’t have cut the canal transit short for the world. Just something to think about.

My partner and I decided to take this trip after reading Dave McCullough, The Path Between Two Seas. We both wanted to know more about the history of its building and how it is managed today. This trip did not disappoint. Our guides, Gabe and Luis, were one of the reasons for this. Their passion for their country and profession is evident in all interactions we had with them. Bravo to both of them and to Road Scholar for offering this trip.

Trip was so much more than I expected. The Canal transit was exceptional, the two guides (Patricio and Alexis) were extremely knowledgeable and helpful about the history of the Panamanians from the indigenous to the many peoples who make up the country today. The guides are so proud of their country and they both showed their patriotism in many ways. It was a pleasure to see watch them work off each other.....they each had a special personality. Alexis' knowledge of the floral and fauna was amazing. He even found a tiny plant that I asked about. Patricio "lives" the historical battles from the pirates to the Spaniards and onward .... when we stood atop the Panama Canal Administration grounds and looked down I could visualize all the students racing up the hill when the Canal was turned over to the Panamaians. Brought tears to my eyes! Both were realistic about their political views, current events, schools, cusine, health care and the economy, which I very much appreciated. Our accomodations were lovely especially the Gamboa Forest Hotel in the heart of Panama; saw a lot of wildlife, even near the parking lot and along the roadsides. I have nothing to compare the trip to....it was my first guided trip. Unfortunately all of my future trips will need to live up to Alexis and Patricio!!! There is so much more to write about! The music and dancers were phenomenal! Miami International is a zoo! Plane late, returning to MSP after 1:15 AM, missed the last shuttle to our hotel. Suggest trying to schedule airline departures a little earlier if at all possible.

The trip thru the canal and the visits to the locks were great. Perfect. Our two guides Patricio and Luis were excellent, could not have been better. We learned so much about the canal, the people, the culture. All in a very informative but entertaining way. The two hotels in Panama City were very good -- the one on the canal was great -- watch ships pass close by on the canal 24/7. We has an excellent passage thru the canal with an additional great guide and a spacious ship built for many more passengers than we had. RS chartered the whole ship just for our group of 50. After the canal passage, we felt too much time was wasted on bus rides that served no purpose. Logistics for that part of the trip were not to our liking.

Grit and Glory: Exposing the Panama Canal is a superb Road Scholar tour. Our guides Patricio and Luis were excellent---with a wealth of knowledge of the Panama Canal, the Panamanian Culture, People , Cuisine and Central America in general. We enjoyed getting acquainted with Casco Viejo ,Old Town, and Museo Canal; road trip to the countryside of the Canal Zone, Mirafloras and Agua Clara Locks, a day of transitting the locks in a Norwegian built cruiser with three decks. That night was spent at Gamboa Rainforest Resort---absolutely delightful---seeing tropical birds and plants and as we were leaving , we saw Howler monkeys in the trees. We had picnic lunch and tour at a World UNESCO site , Fort Lorenzo. The tropical fruit that was offered at every breakfast was absolutely luscious. Our final dinner ended with Panamanian dancing and music . We certainly enjoyed a wonderful week experiencing Panamanian people , culture and cuisine and a an abundance of information of the history and up to present time about the Panama Canal. We thank you for planning this spectacular week in Panama.

We had high expectations and this trip exceeded them. Yes, you will get LOTS of canal info and experience...and ONLY 50 people on a boat that can hold 350 to cruise the canal. But the highlight of the tour for us were our tour leaders, Patricio and Luis. WOW! They're always teaching, but in a way that is engaging and entertaining, and they cover far more than the Panama Canal- anything and everything is fair game to talk about and we learned about wildlife, Panamanian culture, and a host of other interesting things. To be able to interact with them on a daily basis was a blessing and a treasure. Yes, there are mostly buffet meals, but the group is larger than usual (a smaller group wouldn't be cost-effective on that canal cruise, and a full boat on the canal cruise would have been awful) and that is difficult to accommodate. But there is ample food and it's good.

The Panama Canal tour was outstanding & I would encourage anyone (including those that couldn't care less about the Canal) to visit the wonderful country of Panama with Road Scholar! The group leaders Pat & Alex were exceptional-they genuinely love their country & will make you fall in love with it too! The "lectures" were not boring in the least & the boat trip through the Canal was an experience unlike anything else. Alex is a superb birding guide & got up before dawn on 3 different mornings to take anyone interested in seeing the gorgeous birds of Panama (we saw Toucans, Motmots, Flycathcers, Yellow Caracaras, Kiskakees, hummingbirds & many more just in the parking lot of the Gamboa Rainforest Resort!) Pat is like a walking encyclopedia of Panamanian history & will keep you laughing. All the lodgings were lovely & the food was fantastic. If all Road Scholar programs are like this, I can't wait to go one another one!

Just returned from the Grit and Glory tour(2/10-2/15/2023) and had a wonderful time. The itinerary was well planned and covered all pertinent aspects of the Canal. That was to be expected. But the additional information provided by our two tour leaders was a major plus. Patrick and Luis made the most of our time on the motorcoach by providing info on Panama's history, its indigenous peoples, wildlife, politics, education and much more. I can't say enough positive things about them. They were friendly, positive, knowledgeable and caring. We had 50 people on the tour and they did a masterful job of keeping things organized and moving on schedule. A major plus was getting us into the restricted zone at the Miraflores locks for an upclose look with a Panama Canal Authority person to educate us on the operation of the locks and answer our questions. Certainly the highlight was taking the transit on the Panama Queen, a 119' vessel that accomodates 300. But our group of 50 had the entire ship, which was great. The hotels we stayed at were satisfactory, especially the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. I would have prefered fewer buffet meals but Patrick explained that because of the unusually large number in the group, it would have been unwieldy to do plated meals. I would recommend this tour to anyone with any interest at all in the Canal.

Just returned from our adventure in Panama. First, Patricio and Christian made the trip so much more than ju8st a Canal visit. WE learned a great deal about the history of the Country, the problems it has had, and still faces today---wide income disparity a major one! The Country is strakly magnificent, and very heavily vegetated, with lush green rolling hills throughout the Canal Zone area. It's obvious that the two Countries have shared a somewhat stained, yet symbiotic relationship. The Canal itself is a real tribute to man's ingenuity, perservance, and creativity. Who would have thought of flooding mountain tops to create the lake to transit the isthmus, and then using gravity, not pumps to toally "Mechanize" the water flow to raise or low heavily loaded ships for passage?? The food, local cuisine, was plentiful and very tasty. On the second day, we got the special treatment to go through the fence at Miraflores, Locks and stand within 10 feet of a large European Cruise ship moving through the locks. All other visitors had to stand back behind the fence, or in a second story balcony, b ut we were right up next to the locomotive "mules" moving the ship---literally! On Thursday, we had a 3 level Boat (that could hold seceral hundered passengers exclusively for our group of 43) all to our own group, with both A?C enclosed levels, and open shaded seating on top, and several benches at the very front of our Pacific Queen Transport. We had both breakfast and lunch during our Full Canal Transit ! Thanks to our wonderful program guides, we enjoyed a cultural, geographical, and historical adventure through one of the world's most amazing and economically important operations. Thanks again, Patricio and Chris.

The Grit and Glory: Exposing the Panama Canal trip went beyond my expectations. Our guides, Patricio and Luis were personable, professional and knowledgeable and added immeasurably to the joy and wonderment that I experienced. Both of our guides have a personal history with the place. They shared their joy, history and changes over time with us. The trip became more than just about seeing the Canals and its development. We learned a lot about the culture, the people and the natural habitats. The trip was fun, memorable and wonderful. If one has any hesitation about going to this place, you can put your "fears and anxieties" aside since Patricio and Luis are highly experienced and they have Winston (the Operations Coordinator) to help and assist. We saw a lot of the "old and new" canals, sampled a lot of the Panamian cuisine and hospitality (which was excellent). I would definitely go back and visit (after I work through my "bucket list". Our group was very diverse and cohesive, yet they shared the same interests that we had. Since I've returned from my trip, I have shared my pictures and encouraged others to come to the Panama Canal with Road Scholar. Thank you, Road Scholar!

This trip is everything it is claimed to be, so I would like to include some things not mentioned. Covid forced a number of changes, including cancellation of the train ride, but our guides and driver expertly found work arounds. On the trip back we made stops at communities and former military bases that we would not have seen on the train, and picked up some more cultural and historical information. The hotel in Panama City has great views of the canal, but nothing else. There is nothing within walking distance and you are stuck with TGI Fridays. We had around 40 people on the trip and we had full use of the boat, which had 3 levels, inside and out. This was the full canal excursions. Apparently some programs have an abbreviated canal trip. My only criticism is about the food, which is mostly buffet and they are all about the same. Perhaps that is just the way it is and I got accustomed to the food on European trips. However, the local beer is good. I recommend this trip to anyone who is interested in how canals and locks work.

Both Road Scholar tour guides ("Irish" and Gabe) were outstanding: well informed, caring, patient, informative, careful, and kind. Even though not required, I gave them both tips; which were definitely earned. The extra speaker we heard (about the canal) on our 1st evening, at the Radisson, was also excellent. The itinerary was bountiful, supplemented well by our guides with stops at the Canal's HQ to view historic murals, a morning birding walk, and a local grocery store. A suggestion: at the murals, suggest to attendees to climb the stairs to the 2nd floor for an even better view of the artist's work. The small extra effort has big benefits in an eyeball-to-picture direct view of each art work. Food was delicious; consistently. Hotels were all good. During our cruise, we were lucky to see the giant crane Titan holding up one of the older locks, for maintenance. Back in the USA I learned that apparently Titan was built in WW II by the Nazis for submarine maintenance. If true, I don't remember hearing about this on our boat (though that could be my fault). If it was not discussed, and is a true story, it would be a good "fun fact" to add future trips. The day before our tour began, I participated in an informative, well executed Emberra Village Tour; which I found and arranged on my own. If future participants inquire about "extra" things to do in Panama, consider recommending it. The one I chose is at this link: http://www.emberavillagetours.com/ Millard Eisler

This program exceeded my expectations in every way! From the choice of accommodations that highlight the content of the program to the great food we ate and then to our amazing group leaders who who honest and frank in their discussion of Panamanian past and present. Crossing the Canal from Ocean to Ocean was such an incredible opportunity and I am thrilled to have it checked off my bucket list!

This is a trip worth taking. It was my first trip with Road Scholars and my first trip with any tour group, so I was uncertain what to expect. The whole trip was wonderful: very informative, fun, and the guides were great. By the end of the trip I felt they were friends and was sorry to have to say good-bye!

In over 100 Road Scholar programs that I have done, this program is the best one I've taken. The itinerary was excellent! The busses we rode in were excellent. The two leaders were easy to hear and to understand. And, the whole program was done in 4 days!

Great trip! We learned so much about the canal; Panama itself; animals, flora and fauna of Panama; and were totally awed by the beauty of Panama! Thoroughly recommend this adventure.

We are smitten!! We attended our very first Road Scholar “learning excursion” last month which was The Grit and Glory trip to the Panama Canal. As educators we appreciated the in-depth lectures and presentations and meeting like-minded “learners.” We feel as if we have become mini-experts” on the canal with its rich history. That said, we could not have been more impressed and have made the decision to ONLY partake in Road Scholar trips in the future! Melinda Spataro & Dolores Diaz- Class of 2019

The 5 day trip to The Panama Canal was perfect in length, content and arrangements. The coordinators were natives of Panama and were therefore, completely conversant of every detail. I highly recommend it even for someone using a rollator as a walking aid.

We had an excellent time on this trip. Our two tour guides, Gabriel and Luis, did a fabulous job of education and handling the logistics of touring. The primary focus is on the history and operations of the canal, but you get immersed in the culture of Panama as well. The full-day transit of the canal on Al Capone's rum running boat Islamorada was obviously the high point of the trip, but it was also fun visiting the locks on land, the museum, and old Panama City. And along the way we got to see howler monkeys, toucans, and a sloth! The hotels were good and the food was consistently buffet style. I have written a web travelogue of our experience at http://www.posix.com/Panama19/ .

Superb trip to the Panama Canal! The right amount of days, only 42 in our group, very well led by Gabe and Abdiel, good accommodations and food. Time to draw, shop, and walk, humidity was high but the weather was good. We did 3 visitors centers, to be able to see the canal from different views and of course the ship ride through the canal- amazing.

We enrolled in this program to learn more about the Panama Canal, especially the recent locks expansion project, and came away with so much more. We were introduced to Panama's history, politics, natural history, cuisine, customs, and people and had a wonderful time!

This was probably the best Road Scholar Program that we have attended. We had two fabulous tour directors, the program had lots packed into it for four days, the food was wonderful and accommodations were good. We recommend this tour for those that desire to go through the full length of the canal but not on a cruise ship.

I went for the Canal transit, since my tour in the US Navy did not include that experience. And I got so much more insight into the country, plus the return trip by train was a bonus.

The size and scale of the Panama Canal, as well as the massive ships it serves, are best appreciated when seen from the water on a small ship. This Road Scholar adventure really helped me to better understand the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal!

Enjoyed the transit of the Canal. Satisfied a life-long desire to do so. Reading of some background materials is essential for gaining full benefit of the program - especially the McCullough and Lindsay-Poland books.

The Panama Canal was one of the best of the Road Scholar programs we have attended. The program was true to its purpose, had very gracious and knowledgeable leaders, was well planned and executed, so we came home feeling we had really learned a great deal in just a week. We found our experience with the Country and its people to be altogether positive.

We strongly recommend Grit and Glory led by Jean and Luis - presume RS will have others as excellent of course. 4 days of intense experience was about right to understand the magnificence and importance of the canal and get a taste of Panama. The trip was beyond our expectations. It did help to go in pretty good weather - January in our case - oh my Panama is a watery country! The trip was very well organized, down to earth, and reasonably well paced.
